Bill to deny recalcitrant husbands religious privileges in jail

Jpost Reports-

New legislation designed to increase pressure on men refusing to grant a divorce by preventing them from studying Torah in jail was approved by the Ministerial Committee for Legislation.

Bayit Yehudi MK Shulli Muallem who is proposing the law stated that in some of the worst cases of divorce recalcitrance, some men who are sent to prison for refusing to grant a divorce chose to continue refusing divorce while being able to study Torah in a comfortable environment in jail.

The legislation, based on the recommendations of the rabbinical courts, would enable the revocation of privileges such as residing in a prison’s religious wing, having meals which conform to strict “mehadrin” kashrut guidelines, the right to study Torah, participating in Torah lessons and the write to keep religious books in jail.
